Beschreibung
This essay examines the business relationships between the renowned auction house Hauswedell & Nolte in Hamburg and its clients in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from the 1950s to the 1980s against the backdrop of the Cold War. This aspect of the history of the Hamburg auction house has received little attention in previous research. Using case studies, the essay highlights, on the one hand, purchases made by East German cultural institutions at Hauswedell & Nolte as rare examples of cultural assets imported from the West into the GDR. The essay also presents case studies of works of art and autographs consigned by East German private individuals for auction in Hamburg and examines the exchange of publications between Hauswedell & Nolte and individual institutions in the GDR.
