Nazi-confiscated property at Leipzig University Library
Description
The aim of the project supported by funding from the Bureau for Provenance Research was to identify books in the holdings of Leipzig University Library which were suspected of having been acquired unlawfully during the National Socialist era. Providing the basis for the identification of these books were various archive records and sources, such as an acquisition list of stocks confiscated by the Gestapo and subsequently acquired by the university library. Approx. 6,000 books were checked. In the project, the present-day location of the books was determined, their data was captured and the individual provenances of the copies were examined. The investigations into individual provenance and preparations for possible restitution were also main aims of the project.
