German Lutheran missionaries established the Hermannsburg Mission station at Ntaria in the Northern Territory of South Australia in 1877.Their primary aim was the translation of the Bible and hymn books into the local Aranda language. The sources that are examined in this thesis are the grammars, dictionaries, texts and translations that were compiled between 1890 and 1910. This thesis establishes a basis for the scholarly interpretation and evaluation of these missionary descriptions of Aranda language by relating them to the missionaries' training, to their goals, and to the theoretical and broader intellectual context of contemporary Germany and Australia (Abstract, Website, last access 21.11.2022)
