Dietrich sammelte zwischen 1863 und 1873 Tiere, Pflanzen, ethnographische Objekte und menschliche Schädel und Skelette in Australien für das Museum Godeffroy.
Dietrich kehrte 1873 nach Deutschland zurück und war von da an als Kuratorin am Botanischen Museum Hamburg tätig.
